Training courses and workshops (2 new workshops available)
##
Two new workshops are available free of charge for the conference participants on 6 June 2024. The workshops are free of charge, but registration is mandatory. The workshops are free, but register is mandatory and space is limited. Please register here. This registration is not on Eventbrite.
Data lakes for ecosystem modelling: Thursday 6 June (9:00-12:00) This workshop will showcase the data available in EMODnet and CMEMS and how this data are being combined into the Data Lake for the European Digital Twin of the Ocean (EDITO). This data can be very valuable to people creating models of ecosystems around the world, as both EMODnet and CMEMS have data layers spanning the world. They will also discuss their work on integrating the two data services for the EDITO and how it is linked to the other data in the EDITO-Infrastructure.
Science-Policy workshop: Upscaling marine ecosystem models to implement EU plans and Directives: Thursday 6 June (13:00-16:00) In this workshop examples of Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) models from different EU funded projects will be used to highlight how the software can and has been used to help policy makers, from the work done by JRC to get the models ready to improve the MSFD; to ways of keeping human activities compatible with both MSFD and CFP; by using spatial modelling to address climate change, the Nature Restoration Law and the Biodiversity strategy; and by highlighting how EwE models can enhance the Digital Twin of the Ocean through end-to-end modelling. The workshop will end with a discussion on how what more do policy makers need, and how the models can be linked to the EDITO.

Registration for courses is now open through EventBrite.
Introductory Course, We're sorry, but the introductory course has been cancelled
Socio-economics in EwE, 6 June, 8-12 CEST
Introduction, theoretical background, and hands-on to socio-economic modelling in EwE and demonstration of how to build a value chain, which combined with an ecosystem model can be used to follow fish from sea to table, and evaluate impact of management and ecological changes. Coordinators: Sebastian Villasante & Santiago de la Puente
MSP Challenge, 6 June, 8-17 CEST. Serious gaming session about Marine Spatial Planning, (http://www.mspchallenge.info). Cancelled.
Historic/archaeological EwE, 6 June, 13-17 CEST. This course will cover building Ecopath models of past ecosystem states using archaeological and historical records and data. By the end of the workshop, you will have a new approach to building Ecopath models of past ecosystem states using archaeological and/or historical data. Coordinators: Meaghan Efford & Kristy Lewis
Bootcamp, 7 June, 8-12 CEST
Bring Your Own Model to a session where you can discuss your model with experienced ecosystem modelers and get feedback and suggestions. Open to everyone. Coordinator: Villy Christensen
Using CMEMS spatial data, 7 June, 8-17 CEST
The CMEMS course will be a OGS team work with support from Mercator Ocean International. The plan is to learn how to extract LTL information from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) and use it in EwE modelling, how to use scrtips to treat such data, learn ways to integrate such data in EwE (from Ecopath to Ecospace), and see some case studies for the Mediterranean. Coordinator: Simone Libralato
EwE from scripts, 7 June, 13-17 CEST. Coordinator: Jeroen Steenbeek
Spatial-temporal framework, 8 June, 8-12 CEST
This course gives a hands-on to the use of the EwE temporal-spatial framework, which is distributed with the professional and the personal version of EwE. Participants will get a time-restricted working version of EwE6.7 with the temporal-spatial framework, which will be setup with a demonstration model with temporal-spatial data. Coordinator: Jeroen Steenbeek
EcoTracer, 8 June, 8-12 CEST
Tracking persistent pollutants (including isotopes, plastic, ...) through the food web. Learn about the background and setup of the module, will include hands-on run of demo. Coordinators : Natalia Serpetti & Kieran Tierney
Course registration is available as ticket add-ons to the conference via this Eventbrite link.
Participation in each course is limited to 15 persons (space is limited), and are charged at €150 for half-day courses and €700 for the 2.5 day introductory course. Students can participate at half of those rates. Fees include coffee breaks and lunch (also for half-day courses).
We use the funding for the courses to support the EwE development, notably new versions of EwE (instructors are not paid).
Registration is open for courses up to the start of each course (space permitting)
Registration is through ticket add-ons at this EventBrite link.
Note that the courses will only be held if we have instructors available and if there's sufficient registration
